In Despicable Me 2, Steve Carrell reprises his role as Gru, the bad guy turned good. The film begins with him celebrating the birthday of Agnes, the youngest of his three adopted daughters, by throwing a party which does not go as planned.
He is soon recruited by the Anti-Villain League following the theft of a research facility that is developing a mysterious serum. He must use his ingenious criminal mind to help find the culprit before any despicable deeds can come from the use of the potion.
While trying to solve the case and capture the criminal — as if that wasn't enough — he must also contend with his eldest daughter developing her first crush, Agnes longing for a mother, and the unwanted amorous attention of his neighbours.
With many of the original cast returning to their roles, including Russell Brand (Dr Nefario) and Miranda Cosgrove (Margo), the characters are well developed from the original, while newcomers Ken Jeong (Floyd EagleSan) and Steve Coogan (Silas Ramsbottom) stop the plot from becoming stale.
Despicable Me 2 takes the better attributes of the original and leaves it trailing in its wake. The creators (Illumination Entertainment) utilise Gru's little yellow minions to brilliant comedic effect, resulting in them stealing a large portion of scenes.
The animation is brilliant, and the many James Bondesque gadgets are brought to life with faultless 3D imagery. Despicable Me 2 is definitely a must-see film and one of the best of the year so far. It will leave children and adults laughing long after the credits have rolled.
